He's dead on the inside and has no feelings left, therefore his feelings have been replaced with emotionless actions. Over time, he realizes that he is changing into something bad. He has a voice in his head that tells him to stop this negativity he's causing on himself, but it's too late, the bad voice has already taken over and tells him that nothing can stop him when he isn't human anymore and can use his own existence to his advantage (Ruiner). So, he has sex with a woman constantly with no commitment (Closer). He cannot trust any women, he is afraid to become close with anybody, but still has a strong desire for sex.
He's better off alone (Heresy).Īfter this, he realizes how little faith he has in society and realizes that all people are are just selfish animals, he wishes to separate himself from the rest of society (March of The Pigs). We assume it's the ending of a meaningful relationship (Piggy).Įventually, he loses faith in God and religion in general, and decides he doesn't need religion in his life. I'll try to tell the story in a nutshell:Īn event happens which causes the man to ultimately decide that nothing can stop him because he doesn't care anymore. The reason that The Downward Spiral is my favorite album, is because if you listen to each song in order of the albums listing, it's pretty much an entire story of a man's slow spiral into insanity, loneliness leading into dehumanization, sex, drug abuse, and eventually murder.
